House of the Dead: Overkill Anime Trailer

If anyone remembers back to early March, I took a break from my Japanese studying so I could work on an AMV for Sakura Con 2009. For Sakura Con 2008, I submitted a Kanon AMV, which was okay. This year I was trying to go with a more universal idea and also use anime from various different sources. I actually spent about a week and a half thinking about possible sources for my video. I decided upon doing a Zombie video for the Commercial/Trailer category of the contest, using one of the awesome trailers for House of the Dead: Overkill. Guess what, the Japanese don’t have a lot of apocalyptic style Zombie anime. I did not have a lot of time, so I had to make use of what anime sources I could find and stretch them to work quite a bit.

The sad part, is that my submission for this year did not quite make the cut. Since all the categories need to be balanced, it scored barely too little for the pre-screening. Sakura Con did have a time spot where they showed all the video submissions for the AMV contest. But since I didn't get a chance to go to it (or any of the AMV showings), I am not sure how well it was received. Personally I think my video should of scored better then it did in the initial screening, but oh well. My AMV for next year will be awesome, just wait and see.

Sources
So far, this is actually my biggest AMV project. It took a ton of hard drive space and a lot of time. A majority of the pre-production time was spent on actually watching my source anime material, which I haven't seen before. So a week or two prior to the production phase, I was doing a lot of watching to see what could work as potential video sources. And since I am working on my Japanese listening skills, most of what I watched was raw and some of it was just in fast forward since I was short on time. So, I can't really explain much about the plot of these shows.

Red Garden
Red Garden was an interesting pick. One of my friends found it off of Youtube while searching for "Zombie anime". It's an interesting, you don't find many Japanese shows about a team of four (which is a bit of an unlucky number), but it's part of the gag I guess. It also takes place in New York, it is always nice to see some anime that takes place somewhat close to home, at least in this country. The character designs do take a bit of time to get used to, I guess that this is what the Japanese think our noses look like. XD So these four poor girls can't seem to remember what happened last night. Eventually they get drawn together to the same place by some red butterflies that only they can see. A women named Lula meets them and tells them that all four of them died last night and that they must work for her if they don't wanna disappear. Eventually they find out that these new bodies of theirs also are a bit special and have some super abilities. Like super jump and super strength. It is a bit like a dark Mahou Shoujo show. I probably would of never touched it if I didn't attempt this trailer video. I think it made good use for the couple of scenes I used it for. Though the DVD is a bit too grainy. Eventually this is going on my buy list, since I would not mind giving it a complete watch in English one of these days.

Zombie-Loan
This anime has Zombie in the title, so I thought it might be useful for my House of the Dead Trailer. (I'm also a big fan of DearS and Shugo Chara, so maybe another Peach-Pit anime is worth a try. On a side note, I'm not really big on dolls, so Rosen Maiden simply didn't appeal to me.) From what I could understand, the main girl Michiru, has special Shinigami vision when she has her glasses off. And these two dead guys work for some special office that Michiru gets wrapped up into. Another one that seems interesting enough to give another watching in English. Anyway, this anime sadly has nothing to do with apocalyptic style Zombies, so I only used a random scene from this show. I watched most of it, but it simply didn't fit the trailer well. >_<;

Shikabane Hime
I somehow decided that Makina from this anime would make a good "stripper" for the trailer. I watched the whole first season plus a few of the episodes that were aired of the second season. It was a pretty easy watch, since it has a decent amount of action. But aside from a dead girl going around killing monsters with her dual Sub Machine Guns, who knows what is exactly going on.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Once I decided on my stripper, I needed a Detective and a Agent. I tossed a lot of ideas around my head, but decided to go with something I've seen and knew I could get a decent video source for. I think using Batou and Togusa worked okay fit for this, even if I didn't have much monster wise for them to directly blow up. I'm sure if I was better versed in various anime shows, I could of found a better duo.

Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Towards the end I just needed more footage, and it was a show I was watching around the same time. So I decided mechanical hordes of Boomers would do the trick.

Devil May Cry
I actually didn't sit down to watch this one at all. And I never really played the games either. (I played the 4th for like an hour.) But this was on my shelf and I grabbed it at the last minute. I just tossed it in my DVD player and watched it at like 8x speed to find a couple of scenes that would work. And I think they did a great job for a last minute solution.

Conclusion
I am pretty sure I could of done a better job with this. Some of the scenes were not timed well to the audio. I wonder what I should of changed to make my score a bit higher in the pre-screening. Overall, I am very happy with the results, I'm just sad it didn't make it into the contest. Well, always got next year. What do you think of my video?

Yeah, it definitely should have gotten in. I was only able to see the first 2 categories’ worth of vids, and… man, I don’t think the screening committee was very good. That, or they really didn’t get that many great vids. The Revenge of Mr. Transformer (it was Transformers the Movie to Mr. Roboto) was easily the best one I saw. Everything else either had way too many fast cuts, or very average at best.

Well I for one went to this so called AMV contest and just so the world fully understands this I’m going to put it in quotations, “There were problems with the AMV contest”. Now I’m not saying because this ABSOLUTELY AWESOME SUPER COOL HILARIOUS FABULOUS AMV that akurasu put together wasn’t in the show didn’t ensure the problems that were present. One problem everyone in the room agreed with (because everyone gripped when it happened) was the over populated categories showcasing the same show or movie. There were repeats in the same categories! Why would you do that! I like Final Fantasy Advent Children but for the sake diversity when you have two amv’s showing the same movie in the same category you’re just ensuring both video’s demise. The second problem which goes with the first problem was that not only did the pre-screener’s over load categories but also they put videos RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER! You’re watching Advent Children then guess what? You’re watching it again but with different music. Advent Children wasn’t the only overly used show. There was another one I don’t know the name of it but it had women with rather large bosoms popping bullets out between their mountains while reloading their guns. Now to really put the icing on this horribly crafted amv contest the humor category was pretty much the same as last year. Now this is purely my opinion but I find nothing humorous about Megatron singing Mr. Roboto. Transformers don’t make me laugh. Anyway with hope, luck, and a bit of “adjectives” next year HAS to be better then this year.
