Kobato. Review
I recently finished watching Kobato. (Originally this was posted to Facebook, but I felt this deserved a repost to my blog, with some additions such as some fancy pictures.) This is the first CLAMP show I’ve seen in a long while (since Rayearth) that I’ve watch to completion. I’d say I overall enjoyed it. Certainly not a show for everyone, but if you enjoy shoujo & slice of slice anime, this wouldn’t be a bad pick.
The premise is rather simple, Kobato needs to heal people’s hearts, within only a year’s time, so her wish can be granted. Kobato is a sweet yet clueless clumsy girl that certainly grows on you with her selfless “I’ll do my best” attitude. The first half of the series is a bit slow paced and episodic. However if you can make it through the beginning, the last half certainly shows how the characters have developed and improved. If you can stick around to the end, it really builds the cast slowly towards a great two episode finale. ;_;
This show isn’t very high budget, but it has wonderful CLAMP character designs, better then most of their other work actually, since the characters are not as skinny and sandwich needing as most of their other stuff. XD The small budget is well used as the animation quality remains constant throughout the 24 episode run.
I watched the entire thing raw (with Japanese subtitles), Not the easiest show to watch at my current level of Japanese but it got a lot easier towards the end thanks to my constant Japanese studies. I actually dropped the show in the middle for several months due to the pacing of the first half of the series, but I’m really glad I picked it up again and finished it.
